In the year of screenings, most exposure due to burn pits in Iraq or Agent Orange in Vietnam.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that they have screened a total of 5 million veterans for toxic exposure due to their military service. Since the toxic screening program was first launched a year ago, the department identified potential toxic exposures in 42 percent of veterans screened, most of which were caused by proximity to burn pits in Iraq and the chemical defoliant Agent Orange in Vietnam.
“We have made significant progress toward our goal to screen all Veterans enrolled in VA health care for toxic exposures at least once every five years,” said Under Secretary for Health Shereef Elnahal. “But most importantly, this milestone means we’ve had 5 million opportunities to provide Veterans with the exposure-informed care they deserve.”
